Police provide more details of how they caught the Bridgewater Canal sexual assault suspect.

A male has been arrested and charged with 12 sexual assault incidents which happened along the Bridgewater Canal in Sale, Altrincham, Stretford and Old Trafford.

In each incident the male approached the female victim from behind whilst riding a mountain bike before touching them inappropriately and then cycling off. The offender is described as around 5ft tall, of slim build and young in appearance.

He has most often been described as wearing dark clothing.

The incidents understandably sparked concerns in the community with one person commenting on GMP’s original post;

“The offender will only grow in confidence as the dates of each reported incident show, more likely they will progress from a touch to a full on attack within weeks, you know roughly what time and areas these attacks happen, get boots on the ground and nip it in the bud before he steps it up a level!”

CID set up a dedicated operation which involved several units working together. The neighbourhood teams have been cycling along in full high visibility uniform, there were officers in plain clothes walking along the canal path.

An officer from one of Trafford specialist units spotted the suspect and made the arrest whilst near Sale. The suspect from the Sale area, has been remanded to prison pending his court date next month.

Great work from all involved in getting this male off our streets.
